BRYSON HOUSE AND ECT JOIN FORCES TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR NORTHERN IRELAND’S RESIDENTS TO RECYCLE FROM HOME

29/10/2003

ECT has joined forces with Bryson House, Northern Ireland’s oldest community-based charity, to set up an innovative new recycling partnership.

ECT, the UK’s largest community recycling provider, has joined forces with Bryson House, Northern Ireland’s oldest community-based charity, to set up an innovative new partnership; Bryson House Recycling.

Bryson House Recycling will build on Bryson House’s experience of providing a pilot doorstep recycling service to 30,000 households in the Greater Belfast, Banbridge and Armagh areas and ECT’s track record and expertise as the UK’s largest community provider of recycling services (it already provides services to more than one million homes) to deliver a wide range of recycling services that will make it quick, easy and convenient for residents to recycle from home.

Every Northern Ireland household produces, on average, almost a tonne of rubbish each year, yet recycles only six per cent of it. This means that 94 per cent of an average household’s rubbish ends up being dumped into landfill sites, adding to Northern Ireland’s growing waste mountain.

Nick McCafferty, Chair of Bryson House Recycling, says:

“By providing initiatives such as doorstep collection services for recyclable goods we can make it easy for residents to recycle up to 35 per cent of their rubbish

“With Northern Ireland needing to achieve recycling rates of 25 per cent by 2005 this means that local authorities should be able to exceed their targets years ahead of schedule.”

Stephen Sears, Chief Executive of the ECT Group commented:

“This exciting new initiative underlines our commitment as a Group to building a network of economically sustainable enterprises through joint ventures with partners, such as Bryson House, who share our values.

“Bryson House Recycling will combine our industry expertise and track record of success in providing recycling services to local authorities throughout the UK with Bryson House’s local knowledge and track record of providing community-based services. This combination, together with our shared values and record of innovation will enable us to offer residents and local authorities first class doorstep recycling services that will make it easy for residents to recycle from home.

“Our new partnership with Bryson House shows that community recycling is going from strength to strength and we are delighted to be able to provide a range of new services that will help Northern Ireland meet its statutory recycling targets.”
