ECT RECYCLING HELPS TOWER HAMLETS BOOST ITS RECYCLING SERVICES TO RESIDENTS BY ALMOST 50%

31/10/2002

Residents in Tower Hamlets benefit from an improved doorstep recycling service

Starting in November 2002, residents in Tower Hamlets will benefit from an improved doorstep recycling service with a boost of almost 50% to the number of households that will be able to recycle from home, thanks to an innovative partnership between Tower Hamlets Council and ECT Recycling, the UK’s largest community recycling provider.

Improvements will include expansion of the service from a fortnightly to a weekly collection, an increase in the range of recyclable materials - adding textiles, aluminium foil and yellow pages to the glass, cans, paper and cardboard which are currently collected and an extension of the number of households which will receive the service from 11,000 to 17,000 homes.

ECT Recycling will take over the contract from existing contractors Onyx to provide a doorstep collection service and operate recycling banks across the borough, initially from November 2002 for 18 months with the possibility of a two-year extension to the contract. The new improved service will start from January 2003.

ECT Recycling, is the largest not-for-profit, community owned, recycling organisation in the UK. This new contract means that ECT Recycling will now be providing a valuable doorstep recycling service to more than one in six Londoners.

Rhona Coulter, Recycling Operations Director of ECT Recycling, says: “We are delighted to be able to work with yet another London local authority to boost the recycling services it can offer residents and help Tower Hamlets to meet its statutory recycling targets.

Councillor Betheline Chattopadhyay, Lead Member for environment, said: "Recycling is a key priority for Tower Hamlets. Through our partnership with ECT we aim to encourage, enthuse, and convince more residents to recycle.”
