Barnet Council is in line for a prestigious award for its popular recycling services.
The council and ECT Recycling have been shortlisted for the finals of this year’s National Recycling Awards in the best partnership category. The awards recognise and reward recycling best practice throughout the industry.
The council have joined forces with ECT Recycling - the UK’s largest community recycling organisation - to run a successful, multi material weekly doorstep recycling service covering over 116,000 homes in Barnet. This is in addition to the setting up of a state-of-the-art Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre at Summers Lane in North Finchley.
The partnership has also seen the introduction of a flats recycling service giving residents living in the borough’s 13,000 medium to high-rise flats the opportunity to recycle paper, glass and cans.
The award nomination follows a successful first year of the partnership that has seen the council’s recycling rate increase from 7% to 12%.
Cabinet Member for Environment Cllr Coleman said:
“Getting nominated for this award is fantastic news and a great achievement. It is due recognition of the council’s commitment to providing a first class recycling service.”
Andy Bond, Managing Director of ECT Recycling Ltd, said:
“Increasing the amount we recycle in the UK is essential if we are to help improve the environment and being short listed for this award just goes to show that the people of Barnet are helping to do their bit.”
The awards, which are organised by Materials Recycling Week, will be presented at a gala evening on November 5, 2002 at the Cardiff International Arena.
