A survey released by Friends of the Earth last Friday (19th March) into the state of council recycling services has named community recycler ECT three times in its list of ten best council recycling services.
Friends of the Earth's survey is the first time that data has been gathered from all local collection authorities on the scale and type of recycling doorstep collections offered in England.
The ECT services highlighted were those run in partnership with the London Borough of Barnet, Vale of the White Horse District Council and West Oxfordshire District Council.
The top councils met a number of 'best practice' criteria, including: offering a recycling service to all homes; collecting a wide range of materials; and separating materials on the doorstep (because these materials will be less contaminated than those sorted at a central sorting facility).
Commenting on the news, Andy Bond, Managing Director of ECT, said:
"This survey shows that if England is to improve its recycling record, then local government has to offer homes the chance to recycle more of their rubbish, more of the time. This means providing services that are frequent; that collect more than just newspaper and glass; and that give everyone the chance to recycle, including those in high-rise and rural dwellings.
"We always aim to make recycling easy but we have also said for sometime that separating materials on the doorstep is key to guaranteeing markets, as well as ensuring that everything collected actually gets recycled. We are delighted that some of our services have been recognised but we know that, if services like these are to become the norm, local government and organisations like us have a lot of work ahead of us."
