From the 1st April 2004, the London Borough of Barnet will be introducing a compulsory scheme to help encourage residents to recycle more of their rubbish.
Under the scheme - covering over 25,000 households in the borough - residents who deliberately, or persistently, fail to use the doorstep recycling service provided may face being fined.
Commenting on the council's initiative, Andy Bond, Managing Director of ECT – the community recycling organisation that runs Barnet’s recycling services - said:
“ECT welcomes the bold move by Barnet Council. Everyone in Barnet has the opportunity to recycle and most people already participate.
“It makes sense to encourage people not to put recyclable materials in the bin because it costs the council money and damages the environment.
“The move to compulsory recycling is common in countries with the highest recycling rates and many council's will be watching with interest.”
