NEW RECYCLING CENTRE OPENS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITIES

21/04/2004

This Wednesday (21st April), a new Recycling Showcase and Training Facility opened at ECT's recycling depot in Bristol, showing residents and businesses in the city the benefits of reducing, reusing and recycling more rubbish.

The facility has been refurbished with the help of £34,325 in National Lottery funding from the Social, Economic and Environmental Development (SEED) Programme. This funding has made it possible for ECT to provide a dedicated and safe environment for the local community, local businesses and waste management professionals to learn about the practical aspects of re-use and recycling first-hand. It will also improve access to employment for local people and help local businesses to improve environmental performance and efficiency through accredited environmental training and information.

The £15.3 million SEED Programme, managed by the Royal Society for Nature Conservation (RSNC) and 11 consortium partners, has awarded £2.4 million of National Lottery money in the South West, on behalf of the New Opportunities Fund, under its Green Spaces and Sustainable Communities funding programme, of which this scheme is just one.

In the first year, the Recycling Showcase and Training Facility is expected to be visited by over 750 waste professionals and members of the public wanting to learn about recycling and see a busy recycling depot in action. Enploy, the training provider at the centre, also expects many local organisations to take advantage of the environmental, technical and management training and qualifications being offered. Enploy is a £1.5 million partnership project between Future West, the community recycling organisation ECT and The Training and Learning Consultancy.

Commenting on the launch Greg Eynon, from ECT's Bristol depot, said:

"The training facility will not only provide an essential resource for the employees of ECT and local businesses but the Recycling Showcase will help the local community understand first-hand why recycling and re-using rubbish is essential if we want to create a cleaner, greener Bristol."

The National Lottery grant from the SEED Programme is also funding educational and promotional materials, computer equipment and professional fees.

The SEED Programme aims to stimulate local economic development and support community enterprise, promoting sustainability and helping disadvantaged communities improve the quality of their environment. For more information visit RSNC’s website: www.rsnc.org/seed.
