CAMPAIGN CALLS FOR RESIDENTS TO TRIM THEIR WASTE LINE!

13/08/2004

Barnet Council and ECT Recycling have launched a new campaign urging more residents in Barnet to reduce the amount of rubbish they put into their bin. Getting more people into the recycling habit is vital to reduce the amount of waste produced in the borough.

The campaign highlights how easy it is for residents to recycle their waste. All houses in the borough have a doorstep recycling service and the campaign will make more people aware of the materials they should be separating and putting into their Black Box.

The first phase of the campaign has begun with advertising across Barnet. This will be followed over the next few months by recycling competitions, a new recycling website and information about the different ways you can recycle in the borough.

Recycling is already a habit for many residents with over 19% of the borough’s waste already being recycled. With the help of every household, Barnet can hit the target it has set itself of 30% recycling by 2005/06. All that is needed is for every household to use their Black Box

Cabinet Member for Environment, Matthew Offord commented: “Residents have responded well to the compulsory scheme that we launched in parts of the borough in March but we must encourage even more people to become regular recyclers. We are working hard to make it as easy as we can for recycling to become a part of everyone’s daily routine”.

Working in partnership with ECT Recycling, the UK’s largest community recycling organisation, Barnet Council provides a range of services including a Black Box doorstep recycling services, Flats’ Recycling Service and the Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre at Summers Lane. The council also provides Bring Banks to help residents recycle. For up to date information about the service visit www.barnet.gov.uk/recycling.
Residents can obtain a Black Box free of charge by contacting ECT Recycling on 020 8371 3670 or email barnet@ectrecycling.co.uk
