BRYSON RECYCLING CHIEF HEADS TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE

17/07/2006

Eric Randall, Director of Bryson Recycling, a social enterprise jointly owned by ECT and the Bryson Charitable Group, will soon head to Buckingham Palace to collect an MBE awarded for his contribution to waste management in Northern Ireland.

Eric, who joined the recycling sector in 1990 helping to establish a community recycling programme in Bradford, is now Director of Bryson Recycling, which has 130 staff and processes approximately 60% of household recyclables collected at the kerbside in Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the award Eric Randall, who has three children, said “I am delighted to have received this award, and am very proud of the contribution Bryson Recycling has made to recycling in Northern Ireland. It also brings recognition to the role of social enterprises in delivering recycling services.”

“Since I began in this industry, recycling has gone from a fringe to a mainstream activity, which is great. We’ve been able to use the experience we’ve gained in the sector to become a major force.”

Since ECT joined with the Bryson Charitable Group to run Bryson Recycling as a joint venture two years ago, its turnover has jumped from £500,000 to £5 million.

Stephen Sears, Chief Executive of ECT, congratulated Eric on his achievement.

“This is a well-deserved accolade. Eric is a fantastic leader in the industry in Northern Ireland and his commitment to recycling and effective waste management has contributed greatly to the success of Bryson Recycling.”

Bryson Recycling runs Northern Ireland’s largest MRF (Materials Reclamation Facility) which handles up to 40,000 tonnes of material a year and recovers 93 percent of the material delivered to the site, maximising the amount of goods which are recycled and minimising landfill.

Bryson Recycling also collects recyclables directly from over 140,000 households, over 20% of the homes in Northern Ireland.
