Barnet to go ‘green’ in 2008. Start the year by making a recycling resolution.
You could resolve to start composting at home, to recycle more using the black box recycling service, to practise the ‘three Rs’ – reduce, reuse and recycle – or to use material bags instead of plastic bags when you go shopping.
Councillor Matthew Offord, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “I can’t think of a better way of resolving to be more ‘green’ this year than pledging to keep a recycling resolution.
“It will not only provide a better environment for you but will help to tackle the amount of waste being thrown in general rubbish bins every year.”
A list of potential resolutions can be found on Barnet Online, by visiting www.barnet.gov.uk/recycling-resolutions, or you can make up your own.
And, having made your recycling resolution, a great way to get started is to recycle your Christmas tree and Christmas cards, minimising the amount of waste that is thrown away over the festive period.
You can recycle your Christmas tree in two ways in Barnet – if you have a green garden and kitchen waste bin, simply leave your Christmas tree at the side of the bin on your collection day. Alternatively, you can take your Christmas tree to the Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre in Summers Lane, North Finchley, N12. Place it in the green waste container for recycling.
Christmas cards can be recycled in special bins provided at participating branches of WH Smith, Tesco, Marks and Spencer and TK Maxx. They will also be available at libraries and the Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre between 2 January and 31 January. For a full list of stores accepting Christmas cards, you can visit www.woodland-trust.org.uk
The council works in partnership with ECT Recycling to provide the black box recycling service, and Andy Young, ECT General Manager, added: “On average Barnet residents recycle 30 per cent of their rubbish, but could recycle up to 60 per cent of their bin, by using the black box service for a total of 12 different items.
“So please use your black box service to recycle more in 2008.”
