Adding plastic bottles and cardboard to the doorstep recycling collection service will help Barnet residents recycle even more, under a new five-year partnership between ECT Recycling and Barnet Council, it was announced this week.
This will add to the paper, glass, tins and cans, aluminum foil, shoes, mobile phones, textiles, engine oil and batteries which ECT currently collect, separate at the kerbside and then send for reprocessing and recycling, so that residents can be confident that 99.95% of what they put out on the doorstep ends up being recycled. The majority of materials will continue to be recycled in the UK, reducing carbon emissions.
Improvements to the service will be put in place towards the end of the year. As well as adding new materials to the doorstep service, there will be a new recycling container for residents to add to their black boxes or communal flats recycling facilities. The new contract will also see the creation of a 'baling' facility at Mill Hill Depot for cans, plastic bottles and cardboard, which will make it easier to transport the material in bulk.
The introduction of the new materials is hoped to further boost recycling to keep the council on track to hit its target of 40 per cent of waste being recycled by 2010 and 45 per cent by 2014.
Andy Bond, ECT Recycling, Managing Director said “We are delighted to be able to extend our partnership with Barnet and look forward to working with them over the next five years, to make it easier for residents to recycle even more and helping boost recycling rates in the borough”.
