What is the Garden Waste Service?

The garden waste service is a scheme that collects garden waste from homes for composting.

What are common reasons for my garden waste not being collected?

With any service that collects from thousands of homes, there will be incidences where garden waste, put out for collection is not picked up.

Reasons include: the garden waste not being visible from the road, contamination and use of the wrong sack or container. It is important to use only the pink re-usable sacks supplied. If a problem is reported, May Gurney will ensure that the incident are dealt with promptly.

Why should I use the Garden Waste Service?

The service has been introduced in for one reason - to help prevent the environmental damage caused by the dumping of garden waste into the ground using landfill sites. Composting makes sense both for the environment and your pocket by:

  1. Reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill and, therefore, the production of harmful pollutants and green house gases
  2. Reducing the use of limited natural resources such as peat and the damage this causes to wildlife sites
  3. Returning vital organic matter and nutrients to the soil, through the use of compost as a soil improver.

How does it work?

To use the service, residents without an existing supply of bags, need to order special biodegradable garden waste bags. In to your bag, you can place grass cuttings, twigs, hedge trimmings, plants, flowers and leaves - because they can all be composted.

However, you cannot put soil, stones, fallen fruit, litter or kitchen waste into them, because they would contaminate any compost produced. The bag must be then placed outside your home for collection by May Gurney Environmental Services.
